WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (PIX11) – A police officer rescued a 10-year-old boy who was trapped inside a Long Island home during a fire Thursday, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The fire broke out at a West Islip home around 7:30 a.m., according to authorities. An 8-year-old boy had managed to escape the house by climbing out a window, police said.

Officer Richard Senese went into the house through a side door, according to authorities. Senese was met with heavy smoke once inside, but was able to find the boy and lead him out of the house, police said.
