Police medic bit after woman becomes combative during welfare check on LI: NCPD

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Nassau County police officer and medic were both attacked during a welfare check on Long Island on Sunday, according to authorities.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. in Valley Stream. Police said officers determined that a woman, identified as 43-year-old Brigitte Atta-Poku, needed medical treatment and evaluation during the check.

Atta-Poku then became violent and combative, hitting an officer and then biting a police medic, according to authorities. Her son, 23-year-old Manai Frank, is accused of then jumping towards the medic and pushing him.

The officer and medic were both transported to a local hospital for their injuries, according to authorities.

Atta-Poku and Frank were arrested and charged with assault, police said. Atta-Poku was also charged with resisting arrest.
