BUSHWICK, Brooklyn (PIX11) --- Police identified the armed man who was fatally shot by two officers in Brooklyn over Memorial Day weekend, according to the NYPD.

Andre Mayfield, 26, of Brooklyn, died during an encounter with two police officers on Elder Street between Central and Evergreen avenues in Bushwick at around 2:20 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said the cops were in their police car when Mayfield, armed with two knives, tapped on the vehicle. The cops then got out of the car and first tried to talk to the man before they both tased him, authorities said.

But Mayfield got up and charged at the officers before they opened fire, killing him, police said. Mayfield died at the hospital.

"The tasers worked the first time the male fell to the ground. He dropped one of his knives. He was able to come up with a second knife and did not listen to the warnings to stop," Chell said.

Police said Mayfield was suffering from mental illness and the officers tried to de-escalate the encounter before it turned deadly.

"(It was a) very tough night for these two officers and for the family of (Mayfield)," Chell said.

In March, cops shot and killed 19-year-old Win Rozario when he threatened them with scissors in the family's Queens home. Rozario was also battling mental illness.

The officers were trying to take Rozario into custody before he pulled the scissors out of a drawer and went toward the two cops, who initially subdued him with their Tasers, Chell said at the time.

"The police department has continuously evolved the use of the methods, bringing in those who are mental health professionals. We have to continuously move to get better,” Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday about the Mayfield incident.
