Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina discussed several issues, ranging from defence cooperation to economic partnerships, during the summit at Hyderabad House in Delhi on Saturday.
However, the spotlight was on the significant strides made in enhancing rail connectivity, a vital catalyst for economic development and people-to-people contact, between the two neighbouring countries.
PM Modi emphasised the importance of connectivity, stating, "Enhanced connectivity is vital for the economic development of both our countries. It facilitates easier trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, which are the pillars of our strong bilateral relations." âèâè
The leaders inaugurated the 6th cross-border rail link between Agartala station in India and Akhaura on the Dhaka-Chittagong railway line, marking a significant milestone in cross-border rail connectivity that had been a priority since their last bilateral engagement in 2023.
This rail link is expected to enhance trade by providing a shorter route for the transportation of goods between northeastern India and Bangladesh, thereby reducing costs and transit times. It also holds the potential for boosting tourism and cultural exchanges, as easier access is likely to attract more tourists and facilitate greater cultural intermingling.
The summit was also marked by the signing of 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), which included agreements on digital and green partnerships, maritime cooperation, and notably, the Shared Vision for India-Bangladesh Rail Connectivity. âè
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina remarked on the future-focused approach of the bilateral talks, and said, "We charted the future course of action to ensure a smart Bangladesh by following Vision 2041 and Viksit Bharat by 2047."
The enhanced rail connectivity is hoped to have both economic and strategic implications. Economically, it is set to boost trade volumes and diversify the trade basket between the two countries, which has been dominated by traditional goods.
