MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A person of interest is in custody in connection to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, police said Monday.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the person of interest as Luigi Mangione.
The man was taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to sources. Law enforcement received a tip that he was spotted at a McDonald’s, sources said.
Police found writings critical of the insurance industry on him, sources said. He was also in possession of a fake New Jersey ID that was used at a Manhattan hostel where the gunman was believed to have stayed before the shooting, sources said.
The man is also believed to have a gun similar to the one used to kill the 50-year-old UnitedHealthcare CEO in front of a New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan last week, sources said.
Thompson was walking to the hotel where he was to speak at an investor conference when the gunman approached him from behind and fatally shot him Wednesday, police said.
“It appears the suspect was lying in wait for several minutes,” Tisch previously said. “At this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”
