NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – PATH riders can now use their phones and credit cards for tap-and-go payment at the World Trade Center station.

The new turnstiles, announced Tuesday, won’t accept MetroCards, SmartLink or OMNY, but will accept any contactless credit or debit card and smart device, according to Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

New York, New Jersey named two of the least ‘tax friendly’ states in the country

Tap-and-go turnstiles have already been rolled out at five stations including: Journal Square, 33 Street, Harrison, Hoboken and Newark. The new turnstiles will be rolled out across the system, according to a representative of Port Authority.

“This pilot program will allow us to put our new TAPP system through its paces before we roll it out to more stations and eventually system wide,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton at the first contactless rollout in December 2023.

SmartLink and Metro cards can still be purchased and used at the World Trade Center station. The price per ride remains $2.75 for PATH trains, with discounts on multi-ride passes.
