PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. (PIX11) -- Friends and colleagues of the Passaic County Sheriff reacting to news of his death by suicide.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh told PIX11 News he was friends with Richard Berdnik for 14 years.
"I was in disbelief, I still kind of am, as I'm sure many people are," Sayegh said when he heard that Berdnik shot himself in the bathroom of a Clifton restaurant.
Officials said it was around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when Berdnik was having lunch at Toros Restaurant and got up and went to the bathroom and shot himself.
"He was having lunch here, and all of a sudden, he went to the bathroom, and he took his life, which is something that is heartbreaking for all of us; it's really difficult," said Alex Mendez, the president of the Paterson City Council.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy issued a statement saying he and his wife Tammy were close friends with Sheriff Berdnik.
The statement reads in part:
"Every single day, Sheriff Berdnik earned the trust of his constituents in Passaic County, and worked exhaustively to combat criminal activity...We will miss him - and his leadership - dearly."
Berdnik served five consecutive terms as the 49th Sheriff of Passaic County. He leaves behind his wife, Monica, and four adult children.
