MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – It's the end of an era for old-school parking meters in New York City.
New parking meters are being installed in Upper Manhattan on Wednesday. The meters will allow you to park by entering your license plate on the touch screen.
Drivers can also pay for parking via phone on the Park NYC app, which already has 2 million users, according to city officials.
The meter transactions instantly link with the NYPD's parking enforcement system, alerting traffic agents to which drivers have paid. The new system is also expected to crack down on illegally transferring parking time to another zone or vehicle using paper receipts.
The city has an estimated 80,000 metered parking spaces. The paperless meters will help the city save enough paper each year to stretch from New York to Los Angeles, according to officials.
