's impressive four-wicket haul, defending champions Chennai Super Kings snapped their two-game losing streak with a commanding 78-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 46 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.
On a dry pitch, Gaikwad fell just two runs shy of becoming the second batter to score consecutive IPL centuries, while Mitchell achieved his maiden fifty in the tournament, guiding CSK to a substantial total of 212/3 in 20 overs.
In response, SRH struggled to chase the target and were eventually bowled out for 134 in 18.5 overs, marking their second consecutive failure while batting second.
Deshpande's three wickets during the powerplay contributed to his IPL-best figures of 4-22, leading CSK's outstanding bowling effort.
After the win, Deshpande said CSK bowlers used the wicket well.
"When we came to bowl, the only plan was to have patience against SRH who are quite aggressive in the powerplay and that paid dividends for us. Bowling that length in the powerplay is crucial, even if I get hit, I always challenge the batter to hit that length again and it worked for me today," Deshpande, who claimed four wickets, said after the match.
"The ground was soaking wet, it swung for a couple of balls and then it did not. It was a bit sticky and I thought we used the pitch well. We had a specific plan - even if they hit a good ball, we will focus on our plans and not get carried away by them," the pacer said.
Following the win, CSK moved to the third spot with 10 points, same as Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. SRH, who are also on 10 points, slipped to fourth after their fourth loss.
CSK will next face Punjab Kings on Wednesday.
