Odisha woman walks 75 km, seeks collector’s help to trace ‘missing’ son

55-year-old woman

walked for two days to reach the Balangir district headquarters town, 75km away, to meet the collector and request him to trace her ‘missing’ son who went to Andhra Pradesh to work in a brick kiln in October 2023 and has not returned since. Padma Seth of Sanjharbahali village apprehends her son Maitra (25) may have been killed.
Padma lodged a complaint with Muribahal police station when her son’s phone was found switched off and he couldn’t be contacted.

She had also informed the labour officer. After repeated visits to the authorities failed to yield result, she decided to approach the collector to find her

missing son

. “When I failed to get any assistance from the police and labour department, I decided to walk from my village to Balangir town to protest against the apathy of officials,” Padma said on Friday.
She said Maitra was in touch with her for a month, but suddenly his phone was found switched off. She learnt that her son had been missing for a few days when she called a fellow villager, who was also working in the same kiln. “Later, the photograph of a charred body was shared on my phone, claiming it was Maitra’s,” added Padma.
“I reached Balangir after walking for two days to meet the collector and plead with him to trace my son or recover his body, if he had died,” said Padma in a choked voice.

In the absence of the collector, additional collector Bijayananda Sethy received the memorandum submitted by Padma. “I assured her that necessary steps will be taken by the authority concerned. The memorandum will be forwarded to the chief minister’s office for further action,” said Sethy.
