RANDALL’S ISLAND (PIX11) – Objects were thrown at NYPD officers during a chaotic incident captured on video at a migrant shelter on Randall’s Island.
Video of the incident, which can be viewed on social media, shows an angry crowd of onlookers near a group of NYPD officers while the cops tried to detain a person inside the shelter.
The officers responded to the shelter on Thursday after getting reports that a man was causing a disturbance, the New York Post reported. A man was arguing with security and acting disorderly when the cops arrived, an NYPD spokesperson told the Post.
In the video, NYPD officers can be seen struggling to handcuff the man on the ground while people in the crowd are yelling at the cops. Objects were thrown at the officers at various points throughout the video. A backpack, a shoe, and water bottles were among the objects hurled at the cops, the video shows.
Someone can be heard telling people to “back up” as the officers tried to detain the man. “Security! Surround the cops!” a person can be heard saying after multiple objects had already been thrown at the officers.
The police officers eventually put the man in handcuffs and carried him out of the shelter.
It's unclear what else led up to the incident.
Mayor Eric Adams spoke about the chaotic incident during a press briefing on Tuesday.
“Any time you have 3,000 people who are placed in an environment that they cannot work, they have to sit around all day, things like this have the potential to happen,” Adams said. “The police officers went in, they carried out their job. They used the minimum amount of force to take the person into custody. We’re going to do a review because of that video … I have to make sure our police department is safe and those residents who are there are also safe.”
