ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- At the beginning of the year, Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed free community college for New Yorkers ages 25 to 55 who want to enter certain fields such as teaching, nursing, technology, and engineering.
Included in the state budget is $28 million to make that happen.
"This is going to be a real attractive opportunity for a lot of New Yorkers," said SUNY Chancellor John King. "And we know employers are very excited about it because they’re looking at jobs they need to fill."
The budget also provided capital funding for SUNY campuses.
"There’s $550 million that will help support our work to do critical maintenance to regularly upgrade our facilities, so we’re able to offer students an excellent space for learning and extracurricular activities across all of our campuses," said King.
When it comes to SUNY research, the spending plan set aside $360 million.
"You think about the work that we’re doing on artificial intelligence led by the University of Buffalo, think about the work we’re doing on battery technology at Binghamton, the work on climate science at Stony Brook— lots of leadership opportunities at SUNY."
Chancellor King will be giving his annual State of SUNY address next Wednesday.
