MIDTOWN, Manhattan (PIX11) – The NYPD is warning drivers not to fake or cover their license plates before entering the congestion pricing zone in Manhattan.
The agency's Transportation Bureau posted two photos to X on Tuesday of two license plates – both showing tape covering one letter.
The drivers were pulled over on Second Avenue at 60th Street and 57th Street between Ninth and 10th avenues, police said.
"Attempts to enter the Congestion Relief zone with alter/covered fraudulent plates could subject you to arrest and/or fines," the bureau wrote.
Congestion pricing went into effect on Sunday. Drivers entering Manhattan at and below 60th Street are charged a $9 once-daily toll during peak hours.
The MTA has been working with multiple law enforcement agencies to crack down on "ghost cars," which have forged, stolen or altered license plates.
The agency has also warned against using license plate covers or other products to try to avoid having to pay the toll.
