NEW YORK (PIX11) – The NYPD has rolled out a new parking enforcement tool that locks onto a vehicle's windshield.
The windshield boot, also known as the "barnace device," can immobilize vehicles that break parking rules, according to the NYPD.
"This allows us to hold those accountable, reduce parking congestion & address cars that are a nuisance & hazard to the community," the NYPD wrote on X.
The reveal of the windshield boot comes after parking meters across New York City went paperless. All 80,000 meters will be upgraded to Pay-by-Plate technology, allowing drivers to plug in their license plate to on-street parking meters instead of using a paper receipt.
