NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Thousands of cameras cover train stations and above-ground locations.
Cameras in stations helped provide police with details on potential suspects in the shooting in Times Square Thursday.
PIX11 News got a look inside the command center in Brooklyn where officers monitor feeds and track reports 24 hours a day.
NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper says all 472 stations have cameras and some have multiple angles of platforms, turnstiles, and mezzanines.
“We can scan and also drill down if we have a robbery pattern or a missing child. We have the ability to get photo and video out immediately,” said Chief Kemper.
The video is also recorded. Not all stations transmit real-time images. The MTA has been focusing on camera upgrades.
New model train cars are equipped with cameras that also provide views to train crews.
The MTA is working to get cameras on all trains by the end of 2024.
