NYPD sergeant charged in cooler death of Bronx drug suspect to appear in court

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) – The NYPD sergeant accused of throwing a cooler at a man after a drug bust is set to face a judge on Tuesday.

Sgt. Erik Duran is facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter after throwing a cooler at Eric Duprey as he drove a scooter down a Bronx sidewalk back in August 2023, according to prosecutors. Duprey, 30, was allegedly trying to flee the scene of a drug bust.

Duprey was struck, lost control and crashed. He died of blunt force trauma, according to the medical examiner, who ruled the death a homicide.

A grand jury recommended Duran be charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault. He pled not guilty and posted $150,000 bail back in January.

Many are expected to gather outside the Bronx criminal courthouse to support Duprey. Members of the city's largest police union will also be there to support Duran.
