TIMES SQUARE (PIX11) -- The NYPD is looking for the public's help in finding several more teens wanted for attacking two NYPD officers in Times Square.
Police released surveillance images of 3 of the suspects Tuesday morning.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Tuesday that five people have already been arrested for the Friday night attack on West 42nd Street off 8th Avenue. It's believed that 10 to 12 individuals, between the ages of 12 and 19, were involved.
Tisch said, "Our detectives got right to work and within hours, identified members of a violent group, identified as Los Diablos de 42, a subset of Tren de Aragua. Several of them are listed in our gang database, and that's one of the reasons we caught many of them so quickly."
Tisch said, "The officers engaged the group and attempted to break up what appeared to be a wolfpack style robbery, instead they were ambushed, pelted with scooters, basketballs, and other makeshift weapons. This was a targeted attack, planned, deliberate, and carried out with intent, and it will not be tolerated."
Assistant Chief, Jason Savino said, "When you look at this crew, right now, 37 total identified members between Los Diablos and who they've been arrested with, who are really a farm team of Tren de Aragua. Of those 37, we have over 240 arrests."
Police identify one of the five arrested as 19-year-old Yeferxon Jose Mijares Hernandez. His address is listed as the Roosevelt Hotel Migrant Shelter.
ICE agents were at an NYPD precinct where the suspects were taken, although Mayor Eric Adams said the NYPD did not report the suspects to the federal agents, as is the policy of the NYPD.
Mayor Eric Adams was asked at a news conference if he believes the suspects should be deported, if they are here illegally. Adams replied, "Once you are convicted, and once you serve whatever time it is, you have abdicated your right to be in this country."
