NEW YORK (PIX11) – Two NYPD officers who rescued a man that fell onto subway tracks last week described the dramatic rescue at the 181st Street station caught on video.
The two officers, Marvel Kingston and Travis Burks, say the Feb. 16 rescue on an A train platform was just another day on the job.
“If it was myself or a family member or friend to go down there I would want somebody to do the same and we are New Yorkers so we have to look out for people,” Burks said.
Kingston said officers are normally told not to go on the tracks right away but to try to get the power turned off first – but when the officers saw a man so close to the third rail, they jumped into action quickly.
A civilian was already trying to help the man off the tracks but was unable to alone. Police instructed another passerby to flag any incoming trains down to stop, video of the rescue shows.
“Everyone was scared, everyone was screaming, they were like ‘the guy fell on the tracks,’” Kingston said.
Video shows the officers and another person pulling the man over the platform.
“I didn't want the guy to attempt to get up because he seemed a little disoriented,” Burks said. “Within minutes the team was able to bring the man up from the tracks to safety.”
Once he was on the platform, the man was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated, police said.
