VOORHEES TOWNSHIP, N.J. (PIX11) – An NYPD officer was suspended without pay after allegedly shooting another person in a fit of ‘road rage,’ according to NYPD and New Jersey officials.
Hieu Tran, 27, of Yonkers, was in a multi-vehicle crash around 11:13 p.m. on May 17 at Route 73 and Cooper Road, according to the Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Voorhees Township Police Chief Louis Bordi.
At some point before officers arrived, Tran shot one of the other drivers using his department-issued firearm in what seems to be a "road rage" incident, New Jersey officials said.
The other driver, a 30-year-old from Voorhees Township, was rushed to an area hospital, where he remain in treatment, officials said.
Tran was taken into custody Thursday in New York City, where he will remain until he's sent to New Jersey. He faces aggravated assault and weapon possession charges, according to officials.
Tran has worked at the NYPD since 2021 and was most recently working in the in a public information role in Manhattan, city records show. In 2022, he received a department recognition for "excellent police duty," city records show.
