NEW YORK (PIX11) – An NYPD officer received two staples to his head after he was struck during a protest on Saturday, according to NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry.
A demonstration began at Flatbush Avenue and Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn and continued into Manhattan where the demonstration concluded at West 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
“[Saturday] evening , The NYPD responded to an unlawful protest. After giving multiple warnings to demonstrators, our officers moved in to disperse the crowd,” Daughtry said on social media. “At that time, one of our officers was struck in the head with an object, causing a deep cut that required two staples. Thankfully, he will be ok.”
Daughtry went on to say that the "NYPD will always support the First Amendment right to peacefully protest, but we will never tolerate unlawful disruptions in our city."
It was not immediately clear exactly where the attack happened along the route of the demonstration.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, police said.
