NEW YORK (PIX11) -- After several violent incidents including a deadly shooting, NYPD brass is in the subway system, talking to passengers to hear, firsthand how they feel about safety.
It is a new initiative called “Chiefs on Trains” where executives ride every train line in the system to hear the concerns of passengers and interact with them.
PIX11 News spent the day riding an uptown 6 train with Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey and First Deputy Commissioner Tania Kinsella.
We asked them how will they change perception, especially after the deadly incidents?
Chief Maddrey said they will continue to add more officers to the system to stay visible and really work closely with New Yorkers.
Some passengers welcomed the high-ranking officers but others including a woman from the Bronx said, “They are not where I live, they are not in my neighborhood, so I don’t feel safe.”
In response Chief Maddrey said, “If she feels that way, we have to do better.”
