HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) -- Crossing guards in New York City keep an eye on safety around schools and they bring more to the neighborhood.
At the corner of West 127th Street and Frederick Douglas Boulevard in Harlem, Brenda Inge knows what's going on. She grew up in the neighborhood and is a well-known presence in the area.
On Wednesday, some friends, family and parents said thank you to Inge. There's always a lot of gratitude on the corner.
"I love the kids and I love the people. This is what I live for every day," Inge said.
Inge sees the job as a way to connect and let passersby know that they are not alone.
"I encourage people. Sometimes they just want to converse. Do you want me to respond or do you want to have an ear? Sometimes people just want an ear," Inge said.
NYPD crossing guards work at the beginning and the end of the school day.
