NYCHA to reopen Section 8 housing waitlist: What it means for low-income NYers

4 months ago 9

NEW YORK (PIX11) – NYCHA will reopen the waitlist for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, giving low-income New Yorkers the chance to rent housing they can afford, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

The waitlist has been closed to general applications since 2009. Families in the program are given a voucher when they search for housing, which allows them to pay no more than 40% of their monthly income toward rent. NYCHA then pays the rest of the rent on the family's behalf.

Applications will open at midnight on June 3 and close on June 9 at 11:59 p.m. Households who qualify for the program must have a gross income of 50% or below the area median income level.

After applications close, 200,000 applicants will be randomly selected to join the program's waitlist through a lottery.
