NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The New York City Housing Authority offers a program to residents that gives opportunities for job training and placement in three career fields.
The program is called the NYCHA Resident Training Academy, or NRTA. It helps NYCHA residents land jobs in construction, maintenance, or janitorial fields. Once you successfully graduate from the NRTA, NYCHA’s Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability office will help with job placement assistance, according to the program's website.
New Yorkers who want to participate in the NRTA need to meet the following requirements:
- Authorized NYCHA residents on the lease 18 years of age or older
- Have valid working documentation
- Must pass the NRTA Assessment
- Must be 100% available during the work week to participate in full-time training activities
- Travel, child care and other logistical issues must be resolved prior to enrollment into the NRTA
- Must meet track-specific requirements
Since program inception in 2010, there have been 3,763 NRTA graduates, 89% of whom have been placed into jobs to date as Caretaker Js, Caretaker Ms, Pest Control Technicians, Emergency Service Aides, City Service Aides and Maintenance Aides with NYCHA, and in various construction-related positions with NYCHA contractors and affordable housing developers.
