NYCHA employee accused of robbery and strangulation in Bronx fight: NYPD

BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- An off-duty New York City employee was arrested for a handful of charges Tuesday, police said.

Elbert Espinosa, a 34-year-old NYCHA employee, was arrested at the 43rd precinct in the Bronx, police said.

Espinosa reportedly took a victim's cell phone without permission. The victim tried to get their phone back, and it led to a fight. Espinosa allegedly strangled the victim while children were around, police sources said.

Espinosa is facing the following charges:

  • Robbery in the second degree
  • Strangulation in the second degree
  • Second-degree endangering the welfare of a child 
  • Assault in the third-degree
  • Criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth-degree
  • Harassment in the second-degree

Police did not disclose where the altercation took place. The status of the victim is unknown.
