NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Richard Davey, the head of subways and buses in New York City, has been hired for a top job back home in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Port Authority deliberated and discussed the two finalists during an open meeting on Wednesday.

Davey came to the MTA two years ago. He has held several transit and transportation leadership positions in his home state, including the Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation.

At NYC Transit, he has worked to improve subway and bus service and keep stations clean. Rider and worker safety have been priorities.

The chief transit position in New York City has seen some turnover in the past six years.

Massport owns and operates three airports and the Port of Boston. During the meeting, some commissioners said Davey's knowledge of the state and transportation experience would be beneficial for the role of CEO.

The other finalist was Eulois Cleckley, the Director and CEO of the Department of Transportation and Public Works for Miami-Dade County.

Two Massport commissioners strongly advocated for the hiring of someone with a new perspective for the future.

The majority of the 7-member board said Davey’s political and managerial qualifications will be good for the agency.

The MTA will conduct a search for a replacement.
