NYC transit and transportation: 2025 projects and fare increases

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Transit and transportation are always big topics around the region. 

In 2025, maintenance and improvement projects will proceed, including a record number of new elevator installations, signal work, and track upgrades.

Two major rehabilitation projects in the region begin in January. The A train will not run to the Rockaways beginning January 20 through May for storm-protection work.

The Hoboken PATH Train station closes on January 30 for a month of renovation and upgrades.

Much attention has been focused on congestion pricing, which will begin on Sunday, January 5. It will help raise billions for capital improvements. Despite losing recent efforts to block it, opponents are continuing the legal fight, with more court proceedings set for mid-January and February. 

Commuting costs will increase. 

Tolls on the Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway increased by 3% on January first.  Port Authority toll increases of about 4% are approved and set for January 5. 

PATH Train rides increase by .25 cents to $3 on January 12.

NJ Transit is set to begin a yearly 3% increase in July, and the MTA has budgeted an average 4% increase. The board must first work out the details and hold a public hearing.

The MetroCard will still be used in 2025, although the MTA says the phase-out is coming soon. Originally, the OMNY system was to be fully in place. More vending machines need to be installed.
