QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A Queens hero got an epic surprise award and rally.
New York seniors held handmade signs to honor their hero, their beloved case manager at Sunnyside Community Services.
For more than 23 years, Guisela Lara has been their biggest cheerleader.
Now it’s her turn to shine. A rally was held to celebrate this community champion.
Every day, Lara advocated for more than 1,300 seniors.
The seniors wanted to show gratitude for Lara, and PIX11 News helped make the surprise happen.
Lara says she was inspired to help seniors after her beloved grandma died at 99.
Lara is one of six front-line workers and volunteers across the city who have been honored by a nonprofit called LiveOn NY and received their Hero Award.
From caregivers to meal delivery drivers, they are honored each year.
