NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As New York City becomes more expensive, some residents are seeking a break.
The New York City Department of Finance provides the NYC Rent Freeze Program, which includes the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption Program and the Disability Rent Increase Exemption Program.
Both programs aim to help eligible people freeze their rent in affordable housing. According to the website, the program applies credits to the property tax bill that cover the actual legal rent and the frozen rate amount.
Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption Program
If you are 62 years old or older and have a household income of less than $50,000 a year, live in a rent-regulated apartment and spend more than a third of your income on rent, you could be eligible for a rent freeze. Disability Rent Increase Exemption Program
New Yorkers who are 18 or older, get assistance that is related to a disability such as SSI or SSDI, have a household that makes $50,000 or less, live in an apartment with a regulated rent and spend more than a third of their income on rent are eligible for DRIE.
