QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A warehouse in Queens has been a treasure chest for teachers, artists and nonprofits in New York City for nearly five decades.
Materials for the Arts is a nonprofit known as the city's largest creative reuse center. People apply to shop at the facility and can gather all kinds of materials for free.
It's located on Northern Boulevard in Long Island City and was founded in 1978.
From fabric to paper and assorted found objects, a lot of the stuff was destined for the dump. The warehouse is full of potential.
It's a program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Donations are accepted from individuals and businesses. Contact the office for information.
The facility is open to teachers and New York City Public Schools programs. People working with nonprofits, city agencies, and with social justice and social service projects can also join.
A public gallery displays work from artists working onsite.
