NEW YORK (PIX11) -- If you put together a quick list of things you do not want to do-- going to the hospital and filing your taxes—are probably both near the top of the list. 

Well, now New York City is trying to help New Yorkers kill two birds with one stone by combining the less-than-desirable tasks. 

The city is offering free tax prep service at many Health + Hospitals locations, and PIX11 News got an exclusive look at how the new program is going to work. Twenty public and non-profit facilities connected to Health + Hospitals will help expand the already extensive network of free tax prep locations operated by the city during the first few months of each year. 

The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection administers the tax prep program. PIX11 News spoke exclusively with its Commissioner Vilda Mayuga. 

"So, if someone has an appointment coming up at Health + Hospitals, they can make their appointment at the same time, so they can take care of not just their physical health, but their financial health," she said. 

Mayuga said tax refunds, especially for lower-income New Yorkers, are the single biggest cash infusion they see all year. Many of the locations offer multiple languages, in-person visits, and virtual visits-- all done by IRS-certified agents. 

"We want people to maximize that refund, go get that money as we say," she said. 

In general, eligibility for this program is an income of up to $59,000 for an individual and $85,000 for a family.
