EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (PIX11) -- A New York City mother says she’s been waiting for bathroom repairs for weeks and was told she would possibly have to wait until next year for her fixes.

PIX11 News first met 64-year-old East Harlem resident Margie Torres back in 2016, when she helped expose a day care where trash was being dumped outside its entrance every day. Then in August 2022, her building had water outages, and the elevator service was disrupted. PIX11 News helped expose and fix those problems.

Now Torres is dealing with issues in her bathroom. Torres said NYCHA crews came on May 17 to take down the wall in her bathroom due to mold problems, but they never came back.

Torres just had surgery on her back and said she needs a grab bar to get in and out of her tub.

PIX11 News reached out to NYCHA. An hour after PIX11 News left the apartment, Torres said she got a call.

A NYCHA spokesperson told PIX11 News: “NYCHA staff have contacted the resident and will be installing a tub enclosure and shower grab bar in the bathroom tomorrow. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application."
