THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) --- The former gang member and the Bronx man he is accused of decapitating were childhood friends and former prison pals, authorities said.

Sheldon Johnson, 48, allegedly shot his buddy, Chris Small, 44, in the head while they fought over drugs and money in the victim's sixth-floor apartment on Summit Avenue near West 164th Street on March 5, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

The men grew up together in Harlem and were prison mates at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, Kenny said at a briefing Tuesday.

Johnson allegedly went to Small’s home and shot him in the head before dismembering his body at around 1 a.m., according to the criminal complaint. Johnson allegedly stuffed the body parts into plastic bags and stored them in the freezer, according to court records.

"Please, I have a family," neighbors heard Small say during the gunfire, according to police.

Authorities found Small’s headless torso while doing a wellness check later that night. The victim’s legs were still attached to the body, sources said. Small was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities found a kilo press in the victim's apartment and recovered hacksaw blades from Johnson's car near his home in Harlem, Kenny said. The gun was not found.

Johnson was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter the day after the gruesome discovery, police said. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and is being held without bail.

Johnson admitted to being a former gang member, dealing drugs, and robbing a man who owed him money during an interview with Joe Rogan last month.
