NEW YORK (PIX11) --- For the first time in New York City history, all the families who applied for an early childhood seat got a spot for the upcoming school year, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday.
"This is real progress," Adams said. "But we know there is work to be done."
The number of families applying for a seat in 3-K childcare has tripled from approximately 14,000 applicants in 2019 to over 43,000 initial applicants in 2024, officials said.
When the first round of offers went out in May, 94% of the families got a spot for their 3-year-olds before the city extended offers to all the applicants who applied on time, according to Adams.
"The vast majority of families are getting the program of their preference," Adams said.
Officials said it costs moms about $145,000 in career earnings over their lifetime when they have stay home with their children.
