NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A team of housing specialists in New York City is helping people find permanent homes.

PIX11 News received a behind-the-scenes look at the offices of the NYC Mayor's Public Engagement Home Support Unit.

Walking into their offices is much like walking into a real estate office, but there are no commissions, no fees, and it’s about helping homeless New Yorkers find their forever homes.

Zyneisha Green leads a team of specialists there. Green’s passion for helping people in shelters find permanent housing stems from her own story of housing insecurity. 

Dan Nugent, the team's director, said on an average day his team does more than a thousand outreach calls.

With Mayor Eric Adams expanding the Section 8 voucher program for the first time in decades, they are now helping 1,200 in-shelter families that have a Section 8 voucher for the first time.

Each year, they help thousands of New Yorkers find permanent housing. Every time someone gets a family out of a shelter and into a permanent home, they ring a cowbell.
