BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (PIX11) – An Israeli real estate event scheduled for Wednesday in Brooklyn was canceled after local pushback, according to the NYPD.
The event — purportedly promoting real estate on Israeli settlements in the West Bank identified by United States and United Nations leaders as illegal — was set to take place in a synagogue in Midwood.
Similar real estate events in New Jersey and Long Island faced local protests in recent days, and the event in Midwood was expected to be no different. By Wednesday, nearly 4,000 people signed a petition asking electeds to cancel the event at Khal Bnei Avrohom Yaakov Simcha Hall, calling it “immoral and unacceptable.”
“This is not what we want in our borough,” said Sophie Ellman-Golan of Jews for Racial & Economic Justice. “New York City, New York State have no business supporting these illegal settlements.”
In a statement to the Jewish Press, the Flatbush Jewish Community Council said the event was canceled at the NYPD’s advice, but did not specify why.
“The Rabbonim are asking all those who were planning to counter-protest, to please not attend, as the event is not going forward,” the council wrote in the statement. “The shul thanks the NYPD and community leaders for their steadfast leadership in keeping the community safe.”
