NEW YORK (PIX11) -- For the first time since his controversial traffic stop earlier this year, New York City Council member Yusef Salaam is speaking out about the incident.
In January, police pulled over Salaam while he was driving with his family. Salaam said the officer never gave a clear reason for the stop, which exemplified the need for increased police transparency, he argued. Salaam was stopped for tinted windows, according to the NYPD.
Salaam, who's the head of the New York City Council's public safety committee, sat down with PIX11 News for a wide-ranging interview. Salaam also spoke about another traffic stop from his campaign days that still haunts him.
"Why would they do this and, oh, I stopped you because cars like this have been getting away from us? It's almost like one of those things where if people saw it, they might have wanted to riot. It's it's very polarizing," Salaam told PIX11 News.
The member of the "Exonerated Five" also discussed a new law he helped get passed involving police accountability and what he tells his 10 children about interacting with law enforcement.
