NYC bag searches not finding guns, police presence necessary: Transit chief

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Increased bag searches are one of the more prominent features of the recent security changes in New York City subways. However, the police aren't finding much.

The NYPD said they have not found any guns since a surge of officers and troops started searching bags a couple of weeks ago.

NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper appeared on the PIX11 Morning News and said the searches are still necessary.

Kemper said crime is down 15% just this month, but he acknowledged that some riders perceive crime as higher, and that's why a police presence is important.
