NY will see snow, then 50-degree temperatures

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- While Staten Island Chuck and Punxsutawney Phil disagree on the long-term forecast, the near future indicates that a bit of snow is on the way.

A storm system passing to the north will bring a bit of wintry precipitation on Sunday night. For the city and coast, it could change over to rain, but there may be some light accumulations before.

NYC forecast and PIX11's Weather Center

Before the snow arrives, it will be a cold Sunday as temperatures steadily rise into the mid-30s. Any sun in the morning will fade behind clouds ahead of the approaching system.

Snow will make its way into the region early in the evening and could bring a coating to an inch for the city before it changes over to plain rain. Inland areas see as much as 1 or 2 inches of snow as temperatures will be colder and any mixing will be less of a factor.

Behind the system, temperatures warm up quite a bit. On Monday, temperatures will soar to around 50 degrees under a mix of sun and clouds.

It will not be as mild on Tuesday as temperatures top out in the mid-40s early under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will then steadily fall in the afternoon

It will stay cold into Wednesday with highs in the lower 30s. There will be some sun to start, but clouds will be on the increase ahead of a more potent system that arrives on Thursday.

That storm looks to bring a wintry mix at the onset, but warm air will filter in causing it to change to rain for most sections. Highs may make their way toward 50 degrees.

A gusty wind will come with the system, and it will continue into Friday keeping temperatures in the 30s as the week comes to a close.
