NY, NJ among states with most unemployment benefit claims: study

NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York and New Jersey rank among the top states in the country with the highest number of unemployment benefit claims per 100,000 eligible workers, according to a study analyzed by Plus

“It’s interesting to see states from all corners of the US make the top 10,” said Daniel Li, CEO and co-founder of Plus. “Neither the East nor the West dominates the rankings, which suggests that unemployment is experienced evenly across the country.”

While New York is not the highest on the list, it still ranks in the top 10. New York’s unemployment rate is 4.2%, slightly higher than the nation's average of 3.9%, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. New York currently has 382,500 people unemployed throughout the state.  

New Jersey’s unemployment rate is 4.7%. 

Here is the list of the top 10 states in the U.S. with the highest number of unemployment benefit claims:

Plus obtained data from the United States Department of Labor and analyzed each state's number of unemployment claims. The number of claims was weighed against the total number of eligible workers to calculate the amount per 100,000 workers. The states with the highest number of claims per 100,000 workers determined the final ranking.
