Notorious subway bottleneck in Brooklyn must be fixed, lawmaker says

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A notorious subway bottleneck in Brooklyn that causes delays to riders every day must be fixed, a state lawmaker said.

New York State Sen. Zellnor Myrie and Assembly Member Phara Souffrant Forrest held a press conference last week to demand that capital funding be included in this year’s state budget to address the “Crown Heights Cluster.”

The “Crown Heights Cluster” is a notorious subway bottleneck in the central part of Brooklyn where the Nos. 2 and 5 trains split off from the Nos. 3 and 4 trains at Nostrand Junction, according to Myrie’s office.

“If you've ever taken the 2, 3, 4 or 5 train at Franklin Avenue, you know about the Crown Heights Cluster," Myrie said. "It's the subway junction underneath Eastern Parkway where the local and express tracks intersect, leading to the all-too-frequent announcement: ‘We are delayed because of train traffic ahead of us…’”

Myrie said the MTA has been evaluating potential fixes for the bottleneck since at least the 1960s. He wants improvements for the "Crown Heights Cluster" to be prioritized in this year’s state budget.

“Speaking to commuters at the station, I heard first-hand accounts of how slowdowns have led to missed appointments, school lateness and other frustrations for our neighbors,” Myrie said.

The capital funding would enable the MTA to begin work on the issue, according to Myrie’s office.

PIX11 News reached out to the MTA for comment and hasn’t received a response.
