BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Makor Care and Services Network, a Brooklyn non-profit, has been awarded a $643,000 grant to upgrade its facilities and create modern, accessible living spaces for residents with special needs and disabilities.
The grant will fund renovations that will transform the living spaces, making them more functional and comfortable for residents.
Renovations include accessible bedroom and bathroom renovations, upgraded elevators, and the installation of therapeutic jacuzzi bathtubs to promote relaxation and improved mobility.
The upgrades are essential for residents whose needs may change and progress over time. "As our residents age and their disabilities progress, they require additional support and specialized accommodations," said Neil Weinstein, Clinical Supervisor at Makor Care.
Weinstein, who has firsthand experience managing one of the residences, understands the evolving needs of the residents. "They can get much more disabled than they probably were when they were a child. Harder to breathe, harder to move their muscles."
For organizations like Makor Care that serve vulnerable populations, securing finding for critical upgrades can be challenging. State funding typically covers services, not buildings, leaving large facilities struggling to maintain and improve their infrastructure.
"Out intake department gets calls all the time for some of the most vulnerable people out there," said Tzally Seewald, Chief Operating Officer of Makor Care. "And not everyone can handle it because most homes are not accessible and modified for wheelchair bound."
The grant from Congressman Dan Goldman is a lifeline for Makor Care. It will enable them to address current needs and ensure the efficiency of their facilities.
"This grant will truly help our individuals live their best life possible for as long as possible," Weinstein said.
With this transformative funding, Makor Care can continue its mission of empowering people with special needs and ensuring their residences are tailored to support their unique journeys throughout every stage of life.
