NEW YORK (PIX11) – With work happening on both sides of the river, officials gathered for a signing ceremony for the Hudson Tunnel Gateway Project on Monday.
Sen. Chuck Schumer said the federal government will now pay for 70% of the project.
"All systems go. No turning back. Locked in," said Schumer.
Both New York and Jersey governors have pledged to pay for a combined half of the costs.
The federal government will fund the second half or more.
Representatives from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration also participated.
Sen. Cory Booker spoke at the event about the importance of the region and rail corridor and its job creation benefits.
The first equipment will be in the river this month to begin that part of the project.
Work to build the approaches to the new tube has been underway for months.
It is expected to take a decade to build, with an estimated $17 billion cost.
Schumer says the additional federal investment will allow the state to spend its money on other transit projects.
