No respite to rain fury in Kochi; to continue till July 24: IMD

KOCHI: In the last 24 hours,

Wayanad

and

Kannur

received very heavy rainfall. According to rain gauge data from various automatic weather stations in Wayanad, 23 stations recorded more than 15cm rainfall with Valad Vattoli receiving 25.4cm followed by Kurunmalakotta with 23.1cm and Lakkidi with 22.7cm. Five stations had more than 20cm rainfall.
India meteorological department (IMD) had updated the

alert

to red level in Wayanad on Wednesday.

In Kannur, the highest rainfall was recorded at Ayyankunnu (14cm), Aralam (12cm), Taliparamba and Cheruvanchery (11cm).
IMD said very heavy rainfall will continue in the state. It issued an orange alert for ten districts on Thursday. Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on alert for very heavy rainfall of 11-20cm. Widespread rainfall will continue till July 21. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 30-40kmph, gusting to 50kmph are likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala till Friday.
Squally weather with wind speed 35-45kmph gusting to 55kmph likely along and off Kerala coast till Sunday. Fishermen have been asked to stay off these waters in this period. Incois has issued orange level high-wave alert for Kannur, Kasaragod and Kozhikode while yellow alert was issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur for Thursday.

Central water commission announced orange and yellow alerts due to the dangerous rise in water levels in the rivers. An orange alert was issued for Manimala (Kalupara station) river in Pathanamthitta district. Yellow alerts were issued for Achankovil (Thumbaman station) in Pathanamthitta, Manimala (Pullakkayar station) in Kottayam district, Thodupuzha (Manakkad station) in Idukki district, Karuvannur river (Palakadav station) and Gayatri river (Kondazhi station) in Thrissur district. KSEB dams on red alert include Moozhiyar in Pathanamthitta, Kallarkutty, Erattayar and Lower Periyar dams in Idukki, while Peringalkuthu dam in Thrissur is on orange alert.
