NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- NJ Transit is giving a break to I-80 commuters who can't seem to catch one.
Starting Monday, commuters impacted by the I-80 sinkholes can get a 50% discount on roundtrip tickets from select stations in New Jersey. Stations offering the discount include Hackettstown, Mount Olive, Netcong, Lake Hopatcong and Mount Arlington.
“By offering these discounts on the trains, we will get vehicles off the road and provide residents another option to get to work or school, and back home at the end of the day,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
Residents can bypass paying fares at the selected NJ Transit stations and will only need to purchase a one-way ticket to return which would provide them the 50% discount.
Riders heading to New York Penn Station should inform the train crew if they are transferring at Newark Broad Street Station or Summit Station to receive a transfer ticket to their connecting train.
“We are doing everything we can to encourage the use of the railroad to keep the region moving, while we work around-the-clock to complete the extensive repairs on this section of I-80 as quickly as we can,” said NJDOT Commissioner & NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Fran O’Connor.
A third sinkhole that opened on the I-80 in Wharton last Wednesday prompted closures on all lanes of the interstate highway until further notice.
The first of the craters opened in December followed by a second sinkhole in February.
