NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – NJ Transit is holding the second of 10 public hearings over the agency's proposed 15% fare hike on Tuesday.

There would be a 3% fare increase each year after. The agency cited the COVID-19 pandemic and a dip in ridership that cost it $2 billion in revenue.

NJ Transit had been using federal COVID-19 relief funds that will run out next year. The agency hasn't raised its prices since 2015, when it increased fares by 9%.

The proposed fare hike would take effect in July if the plan is approved.
