NJ Transit board to vote on 15% fare hike

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – An NJ Transit board is set to vote on a 15% fare hike on Wednesday.

If the hike passes, fares will be raised starting on July 1 and will increase by 3% each summer after that. For example, the bus trip between Jersey City and Port Authority will go up 50 cents each way for a $1 round trip.

The agency said it's tightening its belt to help ease its financial deficit. NJ Transit has reduced cost by $44 million and identified another $52 million in savings, but said it does not cover the deficit the agency is experiencing.

Riders want the agency to know they expect better service, not service cuts.

The vote will happen at 10 a.m.
