Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has embarked on an 11-day official visit to the United States and Peru, where she will take part in key international meetings and bilateral engagements aimed at deepening India’s economic ties with global partners.
Her visit, beginning on Saturday night, includes participation in the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington DC, and the 2nd G20 Finance ministers and central bank governors (FMCBG) Meeting. Sitharaman will also take part in plenary sessions of the IMF Committee, the Development Committee, and the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable.
On the sidelines of these events, the minister is scheduled to hold one-on-one meetings with other counterparts from Argentina, Bahrain, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
She will also meet with leaders from major global institutions including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and top officials from the IMF and EU.
Before heading to Washington, Sitharaman will stop in San Francisco where she will deliver a keynote address at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution on April 20. She will also meet CEOs from top information technology firms and participate in a roundtable with leading fund managers.
Additionally, she is set to interact with members of the Indian diaspora at a community event in the city.
The second leg of her journey takes her to Peru from April 26 to 30, marking her first official visit to the country. There, she is expected to call on Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén, and hold bilateral talks with key cabinet ministers including those in charge of finance, defence, and energy.
Highlighting the growing economic partnership between India and Peru, Sitharaman will chair the India-Peru Business Forum in Lima, engaging with business leaders from both nations. With Peru being a major player in the global supply of critical minerals and precious metals, discussions are expected to focus on enhancing collaboration in the mining sector to support India's resource security and value chain development.
The trip will conclude with a community event in Lima, where Sitharaman will meet with members of the Indian diaspora.
