TRICHY: The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau – Criminal Investigation Department (NIBCID) on Tuesday seized 16 kg of
ganja
being smuggled from
Odisha
to Tamil Nadu by two men on a train. The
NIBCID
arrested the duo when they got down at
Trichy Railway Junction
with ganja.
The arrested men have been identified as R Mariappan, 51, of Reddiarpatti in
Tirunelveli
and his accomplice T Muthukumar, 27 of the same area.
A joint operation by the NIBCID and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to the seizure of the contraband and the arrest of the duo.
The team conducted a routine check on Howrah Express train on platform number two on Tuesday morning.
The team noticed two men with two shoulder bags standing in a suspicious manner on the platform.
The team caught them and interrogated them. Inquiries revealed that they were in possession of 16 kg of ganja in eight parcels, each weighing 2 kg. Police said the total value of the contraband was Rs 3.2 lakh.
Preliminary investigations revealed that they were smuggling ganja from Brahampura in Odisha.
The contraband was intended to be taken to Tirunelveli. They alighted in Trichy to travel to Tirunelveli by road.
The two men were remanded in judicial custody.
