CHENNAI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday filed a
supplementary chargesheet
against two more accused in connection with the Coimbatore car bomb blast case.
Mohammed Azarudeen
alias Azar and
Mohammed Idris
, both residents of Coimbatore, have been charged under various sections of the IPC, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act in the chargesheet.
With this, the NIA has so far filed chargesheet against 13 accused in the case.
"Azarudeen, who has already been arrested by NIA-Kochi for his connection in the 2019 blasts in Sri Lanka and training his followers in ISIS ideology, met three people in Viyyur high security prison, which led to the conspiracy meeting in Sathyamangalam to plan and prepare the terror attack in Coimbatore," said NIA.
Umar Farooq, another accused, was selected as the amir (leader) to carry out the attack, said the agency. The NIA said that Mohammed Idris' role was to purchase a used vehicle for the blast and to assist the main accused in the attack.
An improvised explosive device (IED)-laden car exploded near the Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwarar Thirukovil Temple in Eswaran Kovil Street in Ukkadam, Coimbatore, on October 23, 2022. Jamesha Mubeen, who was inspired by hardcore ISIS ideology to commit terror act, died in the act.
The NIA took over the investigation from Coimbatore police. The NIA found that that Jamesha Mubeen along with Mohammed Azarudeen, Umar Faaruq, Sheikh Hidayathullah and Sanofer Ali had conspired to carry out a series of suicidal terror attacks in Coimbatore city.
